New Training Yari (槍)

By: Carmelo Grajales

Our new Yari (槍) truly represents our ambitions at Bujinkan Weapons. The desire to create training tools that help us unpack the true feelings veiled in the designs and representing katas of weapons training. So we have set out to make available to students of the art, aspects that are not commonly available in other renditions of a training Yari. In my research and discussions with teachers; who have formal training with the Yari, I was able to gather what was important to them in a training version of the Yari. What I discovered in my research was, the more experienced the student was, the less the demands were in what a training Yari should actually look like. In some older schools in Japan the teachers and students would often just prefer a staff cut to proper length for training. I also assumed that many with this perspective already understood what it was to train with an actual Yari.

So with that in mind, we will be releasing about three training versions of the Yari, starting with the most demanding piece. Our goal at the end of this project is to produce professional grade staffs (nagaye or ebu) that can be rendered as both a training weapon or a live spear by producing a staff (nagaye or ebu) that allows you to properly maintain a live spear head, in a traditional sense, and or insert a training spear head.

Our first rendition of the training Yari is now available to the public. It is a more elaborate design, for very specific reasons. Outside of it’s uniquely attractive appeal. The distinguishable straight blade and pommel (ishizuki), are made of Iron Wood, and in addition to these features these parts are secured and weighted with actual steel to supplement what it truly feels like to wield a Yari. The staffs (nagaye or ebu), is made of our impact grade Appalachian Hickory and is round. The goal here is to provide a training tool that is not only safe, with the endurance and dimensions needed in a good training tool but also provide a simulated feel to its actual weight distribution as well. The staff (nagaye or ebu) measures 6 feet (182.88 cm) from pommel (ishizuki) to spear head and its diameter approximately 1.25 inches (3.175 cm). The spear head measures 12 inches (30.48 cm), with a traditional, triangulated shape at its crosscut, over all length is around 7 feet (213.36 cm). I’ve seen some other really nice, elaborate and detailed renditions of a training Yari, but after speaking with experienced students that told me the older teachers of Japan often preferred just a safe stick cut to its proper length, I realized my focus and ambition would begin with the essentials of dimension, durability, safety and feel. This is our new Yari, (槍), enjoy and play safely.

Custom Bo Staff

I’m excited to announce to the Bujinkan and fellow martial artist that we have added a powerful new feature to our website. I say powerful because I know this option is not available by many other tool fabricators. With this new feature, most custom Rokushaku Bo (bo staff) requests will no longer have wait for a quote. This is just one exciting step that we’re taking toward our future Pro Desk.

I decided to add this custom feature to our website after receiving many requests from martial artists from various disciplines for specific Bo Staff lengths. As stated, this is just step one. In the coming weeks, we will be unveiling on a much larger scale additional features that will give our customers the option to customize their bokken, wakizashi, shinobigatana or ninja-to and other various wooden swords.

For starters, the Rokushaku Bo page now allows you to enter a custom staff length in inches or centimeters. I know within the Bujinkan the proper length that is taught is an estimated twelve inches longer than your height. With the numerous emails that I receive daily with related requests about Bo Staff lengths, we felt that this step was a practical one. Lending to our philosophy as your Buki supplier: “We’re not a ninja superstore, we’re your direct access to a custom tool maker.”

Our emphasis is to provide quality ninjutsu weapons and training tools for the Bujinkan Buyu and our fellow martial artist. With this new feature, you can now determine the wood species of your Rokushaku Bo, your desired shape – a round Bo Staff (maru-bo) or an octagonal bo staff (hakkaku-bo) and now your desired length.

For further questions on additional wood species that may be not listed or additional design needs and customizations, simply go to our contact page and drop me an e-mail.

By: Carmelo Grajales

The Te no Uchi is a simple arrest weapon but also an extremely effective defensive weapon. As a concealed weapon the Te no Uchi can be used as a form of metsubishi by throwing into the attacker’s face in a “whipping” motion or consider one of its primary uses, which is to create an opening and than the Te no Uchi could be utilized as a flexible weapon much like the feeling found in using a Kusari Fundo . The handle is made of wood or metal, which is also used as a fist loaded weapon for striking or attacking pressure points, or as a koppo stick for attacking joints, and even as an aid in disarming an attacker.

The Te no Uchi is a very capable weapon, used for striking, deflecting, throwing, or controlling the space against a knife attack. However, most refer to it as a weapon of arrest since it was originally designed to immobilize an individual.

Techniques for Te no Uchi are found in several traditional and contemporary styles and the techniques are all similar. It is often used against a knife attack and even against the short sword. Training with this weapon should begin with an emphasis on your Taijutsu (effectively using the distance, the space and body movement) the focus being, avoidance of the attacks. The weapon can be incorporated at any time, and proficiency is measured by the natural fluidity that you can keep and the effectiveness of the goals your trying to reach.

Here I was, growing accustomed to using the public transportation, accompanied by my sense of dutiful obligations as a martial artist and something dawned on me. What an implausible warrior I had been. As a God fearing man and self imposed, protector of the innocent, my readiness/willingness level is usually a ten and I am dually aware how that might not amount to a whole lot, but one never knows. Contrastingly, what made this day different and everyday afterward, is prior to that day, I remember the anxious tension that came with this fusion of divine duty and my self imposed perspective. However, this particular question unlocked the cage to this guard dog mentality. How can I provide or keep something I myself have trouble attaining? To be a good steward of this “thing” shouldn’t I first secure it for myself. Further more, to provide it gratuitously to others, shouldn’t I have more than I need. What was the question referring to? It referred to peace. On that day, I secured an enormous level of peace for myself. Most everything was beautiful again and untainted by my insecurities. What wasn’t so beautiful, was even more vivid and uncloaked. The previous mindset made my limited skill set an enormous personal and public liability. The question is simple to all would be hero’s. How can you provide or keep the peace you yourself don’t possess? Don’t be an implausible warrior, whatever drove you to train in martial arts more often than none will have little to do with shaping you into the warrior you become. Like a taxi, it was just a vehicle to get you there. Possess first what you need to keep and acquire even more of what you desire to share with others.

This design, however, was inspired by my Sensei James Morganelli when he made a request to duplicate a special Shiai bokuto he brought home from Japan. Well here it is. We’ll soon be updating our catalog photos with this new design. The calligraphy design is Arabic calligraphy that form the shape of a lion; this was a special request and is not a standard feature.

We’re really excited at Bujinkan Weapons about this weeks featured training tool, the Kunai. We’ve added a special touch by including the kanji for Bujinkan. We’re offering this design free of charge for a very limited time, so get yours now.

Kunai was a tool utilized for gardening and by stone masons. The kunai was never considered a knife, but better compared to an iron lever. Typically made from soft iron and unsharpened it was used for breaking up mortar and digging holes or as a prying tool. The kind of usage the kunai was designed for would of probably have damaged or destroyed much finer, sharpened weapons such as knives.

It’s design was often leaf-shaped with a ring at the end of its handle to attach a rope to, this would allow the kunai to be wrapped for better gripping, or conformed into a weapon by attaching to a stick as a spear, or concealed by tying it to ones body, and many other survival type applications. Contrary to popular movies and cartoons, they were never designed to be used as throwing knife even though it could. Instead, they are used more for digging, stabbing and thrusting.

kunai were common farming tools with no specificity, they were made in various sizes and weights, that could be easily obtained and sharpened and transformed into a simple weapon. It was not unusual to find that many ninja weapons were merely adapted farming and construction type tools.

As a weapon it is larger and heavier than a shuriken, and really serves well in hand to hand combat. There are several varieties of kunai, there’s short and long kunai, some Kunai have narrower blades and others much wider, and some even had saw teeth like some survival type knives have.

While this type of tool is not common to todays culture, training with the kunai brings an invaluable insight to the limitless possibilities available in your Taijutsu training.
