By: Carmelo Grajales
The Te no Uchi is a simple arrest weapon but also an extremely effective defensive weapon. As a concealed weapon the Te no Uchi can be used as a form of metsubishi by throwing into the attacker’s face in a “whipping” motion or consider one of its primary uses, which is to create an opening and than the Te no Uchi could be utilized as a flexible weapon much like the feeling found in using a Kusari Fundo . The handle is made of wood or metal, which is also used as a fist loaded weapon for striking or attacking pressure points, or as a koppo stick for attacking joints, and even as an aid in disarming an attacker.
The Te no Uchi is a very capable weapon, used for striking, deflecting, throwing, or controlling the space against a knife attack. However, most refer to it as a weapon of arrest since it was originally designed to immobilize an individual.
Techniques for Te no Uchi are found in several traditional and contemporary styles and the techniques are all similar. It is often used against a knife attack and even against the short sword. Training with this weapon should begin with an emphasis on your Taijutsu (effectively using the distance, the space and body movement) the focus being, avoidance of the attacks. The weapon can be incorporated at any time, and proficiency is measured by the natural fluidity that you can keep and the effectiveness of the goals your trying to reach.
